Isaiah 30:18
18And therefore the Lord [earnestly] waits [expecting, looking, and longing] to be gracious to you; and therefore He lifts Himself up, that He may have mercy on you and show loving-kindness to you. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) are all those who [earnestly] wait for Him, who expect and look and long for Him [for His victory, His favor, His love, His peace, His joy, and His matchless, unbroken companionship]!

This topic of your Father God’s loving-kindness showcases His nature and character. In these opening verses, pay attention to His other virtues which appear beside His virtue of loving-kindness.

Before we start, think about the word “loving-kindness.” An amazing combination, don’t you agree?

Even more heart-touching is another word combination you will find often in God’s Word, and these appear following in the same verses as “loving-kindness.”

The heart-touching word combination is “tender mercies.” Think about that. Tender. Mercies. [Not mercy. Mercies.]

Psalmists often focused on God your Father’s loving-kindnesses. Here are some examples:

Psalm 100:All
1Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all you lands!
2Serve the Lord with gladness! Come before His presence with singing!
3Know (perceive, recognize, and understand with approval) that the Lord is God! It is He Who has made us, not we ourselves [and we are His]! We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
4Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and a thank offering and into His courts with praise! Be thankful and say so to Him, bless and affectionately praise His Name!
5For the Lord is good; His mercy and loving-kindness are everlasting, His faithfulness and truth endure to all generations.

Psalm 103:1-5
1Bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul; and all that is [deepest] within me, bless His holy Name!
2Bless (affectionately, gratefully praise) the Lord, O my soul, and forget not [one of] all His benefits--
3Who forgives [every one of] all your iniquities, Who heals [each one of] all your diseases,
    4Who redeems your life from the pit and corruption, Who beautifies, dignifies, and crowns you with loving-kindness and tender mercy;
5Who satisfies your mouth [your necessity and desire at your personal age and situation] with good so that your youth, renewed, is like the eagle's [strong, overcoming, soaring]!

Psalm 118:1
1O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever!

Psalm 103:10-13
10He has not dealt with us after our sins nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
11For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great are His mercy and loving-kindness toward those who reverently and worshipfully fear Him.
12As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.
13As a father loves and pities [has compassion on] his children, so the Lord loves and pities those who fear Him [with reverence, worship, and awe].

Have you spent time in the section called Based On Him, Not Us? The whole section, together with He Sent Jesus, He Sent His Spirit, Jesus’ Mission, Jesus’ Sacrifice, Jesus’ Triumph, and Jesus’ Exchanges, all offer proof from God’s Word that Father God does not want you to feel you have to “perform” to “earn” His love. In fact, He has loved you with all His vast heart from the foundations of the earth. He loved you with all His heart from before you were born, before you had any ability to “perform.” He loved you based on Who He is.

Who is He? Although these Old Testament writers wrote down what Father God told them to write between the years 1400 B.C. and 430 B.C., yet God is consistent in what can be termed His “self description.”

Exodus 34:6
6And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord! the Lord! a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving-kindness and truth,

Psalm 86:5
5For You, O Lord, are good, and ready to forgive [our trespasses, sending them away, letting them go completely and forever]; and You are abundant in mercy and loving-kindness to all those who call upon You.

Psalm 86:15
15But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in mercy and loving-kindness and truth.

Psalm 103:8
8The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and plenteous in mercy and loving-kindness.

Psalm 145:8-9
8The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and abounding in mercy and loving-kindness.
9The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works [the entirety of all things created].

Continuing on with the Truth that your Father God’s most excellent glory is His goodness, and His goodness is lavished upon us based on Who He is, New Testament writers introduced your Father God’s loving-kindness this way.

Luke 1:78-79
78Because of and through the heart of tender mercy and loving-kindness of our God, a Light from on high will dawn upon us and visit us
79To shine upon and give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to direct and guide our feet in a straight line into the way of peace.

Titus 3:4-7
4But when the goodness and loving-kindness of God our Savior to man [as man] appeared,
5He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but because of His own pity [compassion] and mercy, by [the] cleansing [bath] of the new birth (regeneration) and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
6Which He poured out [so] richly upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior.
7[And He did it in order] that we might be justified by His grace (by His favor, wholly undeserved), [that we might be acknowledged and counted as conformed to the divine will in purpose, thought, and action], and that we might become heirs of eternal life according to [our] hope.

With these things in mind, let’s focus on God’s display of loving-kindness throughout His Word.

Your Father God proves His loving-kindness as He comforts:

Exodus 23:22
22But if you will indeed listen to and obey My voice and all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.

Exodus 33:11-17
11And the Lord spoke with Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Moses returned to the camp, but his minister Joshua, a young man, did not depart from the [prayer] tent.
12Moses said to the Lord, See, You say to me, Bring up this people, but You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You said, I know you by name and you have also found favor in My sight.
13Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You [progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with You, perceiving and recognizing and understanding more strongly and clearly] and that I may find favor in Your sight. And [Lord, do] consider that this nation is Your people.
14And the Lord said, My Presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.
15And Moses said to the Lord, If Your Presence does not go with me, do not carry us up from here!
16For by what shall it be known that I and Your people have found favor in Your sight? Is it not in Your going with us so that we are distinguished, I and Your people, from all the other people upon the face of the earth?
17And the Lord said to Moses I will do this thing also that you have asked, for you have found favor, loving-kindness, and mercy in My sight and I know you personally and by name.

20But, He said, You can not see My face, for no man shall see Me and live.
21And the Lord said, Behold, there is a place beside Me, and you shall stand upon the rock,
22And while My glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by.

    30Even youths shall faint and be weary, and [selected] young men shall feebly stumble and fall exhausted;
31But those who wait for the Lord [who expect, look for, and hope in Him] shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up [close to God] as eagles [mount up to the sun]; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint or become tired.

10For as the rain and snow come down from the heavens, and return not there again, but water the earth and make it bring forth and sprout, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

9Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, Here I AM. If you take away from your midst yokes of oppression [wherever you find them], the finger pointed in scorn [toward the oppressed or the godly], and every form of false, harsh, unjust, and wicked speaking,
10And if you pour out that with which you sustain your own life for the hungry and satisfy the need of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in darkness, and your obscurity and gloom become like the noonday.

24But let him who glories glory in this: that he understands and knows Me [personally and practically, directly discerning and recognizing My character], that I AM the Lord, Who practices loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth, for in these things I delight, says the Lord.
