In the 1400s B.C., God the
, role-modeling love and wisdom for all fathers, gave Moses principles which would guarantee vibrant life, prosperity, abundance, protection, security, and all favor for all who would follow His precepts. Among hundreds of promises freely offered, He declared:
And showing mercy and steadfast love to thousands and to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.
While many of His rules for vibrant LIFE focused on interpersonal human relationships, one focused exclusively on relationship with Him. In exchange for His hundreds of freely-extended gifts, we were asked to have no other gods except Him.
Because God is, was, and eternally will be, He is able to see from the beginning to the end … simultaneously. He can see the eternal consequences of each of our choices and decisions.
In the Bible God lays out clear instructions in which He shows the consequences of decisions we can make in life ― choices we make which end in either bad consequences [physical, spiritual, and relational death] or good [physical, spiritual, and relational LIFE].
He knows that, in return for momentary scraps of power, riches, or possessions offered by false gods, the price demanded by other gods bankrupts us and makes us slaves … now and throughout eternity.
Today, 3400 years after
established these principles, those who choose to disobey live in fear, well aware that if they do not appease their gods they can expect to be punished with pain and death, fire, hurricane, tsunami, excruciating disease, starvation, flood, drought, or perhaps worse.
The destroyer gods they placate certainly can’t be trusted. They are known to be evil, cruel, vicious, angry, brutal, and demanding.
Because their demands change like wind, their fearful, captive slaves can never rest.
10[Jesus said] The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy
. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).
Not all idols have been formed by the craftsmanship of Man.
Power, riches, and possessions are idols, and God knows that behind each of these seemingly-normal pursuits lurks a demon with evil, malicious, cruel intent to kill, steal, and destroy.
21[You worshipers of idols, you are without excuse.] Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? [These things ought to convince you of God's omnipotence and of the folly of bowing to idols.] Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22It is God Who sits above the circle (the horizon) of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; it is He Who stretches out the heavens like [gauze] curtains and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in,
23Who brings dignitaries to nothing, Who makes the judges and rulers of the earth as chaos (emptiness, falsity, and futility).
24Yes, these men are scarcely planted, scarcely are they sown, scarcely does their stock take root in the earth, when [the Lord] blows upon them and they wither, and the whirlwind or tempest takes them away like stubble.
25To whom then will you liken Me, that I should be equal to him? says the Holy One.
Lift up your eyes on high and see! Who has created these? He Who brings out their host by number and calls them all by name; through the greatness of His might and because He is strong in power, not one is missing or lacks anything.
The Bible says that idols have eyes, but they cannot see. They have ears, but they cannot hear. They have mouths, but they cannot speak. Because they are formed by Man from wood and stone, they cannot respond.
In absolute, perfect contrast to the vicious slavemasters behind lifeless idols,
responds in goodness and love to your every request for His help. Not only does He know when you need His help, but He knows all the reasons behind your need. He says:
And it shall be that before they call I will answer; and while they are yet speaking I will hear.
In absolute, complete contrast to demonic destroyers,
, the King of Glory, the Loving Father of All, the Creator, and the Generous Giver of All Things Good is the One Who watches over you — and He has tenderly cared for you since He formed you and breathed His life into you.
One man summarized, “The unrest of this weary world is its unvoiced cry after God.”
placed a void in each of our hearts that only He can fill.
Separate from our minds, our hearts cry out to Him. In the New Testament, Paul explained:
24The God Who produced and formed the world and all things in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in handmade shrines.
25Neither is He served by human hands, as though He lacked anything, for
it is He Himself Who gives life and breath and all things to all [people].
26And He made from one [common origin, one source, one blood] all nations of men to settle on the face of the earth, having definitely determined [their] allotted periods of time and the fixed boundaries of their habitation (their settlements, lands, and abodes),
27So that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after Him and find Him, although He is not far from each one of us.
28 For in Him we live and move and have our being; as even some of your [own] poets have said, For we are also His offspring.
29Since then we are God's offspring, we ought not to suppose that Deity (the Godhead) is like gold or silver or stone, [of the nature of] a representation by human art and imagination, or anything constructed or invented.
30Such [former] ages of ignorance God, it is true, ignored and allowed to pass unnoticed; but now He charges all people everywhere to repent (to change their minds for the better and heartily to amend their ways, with abhorrence of their past sins),
31Because He has fixed a day when He will judge the world righteously (justly) by a Man Whom He has destined and appointed for that task, and He has made this credible and given conviction and assurance and evidence to everyone by raising Him from the dead.
Who is this Man?
God determined that there was only one Way to escape the wrong choices and eternal consequences of going after gods other than
, and His Name is Jesus.
Long before the moment the first Man sinned,
planned to send Jesus to earth with one principal mission — to die and to shed His Blood.
The Heart of
, the God Who Names Himself Your Father, can be expressed in this illustration from Dr. Mark Stibbe:
"In 1937 a man called John Griffiths managed to get a job tending [paying attention to] one of the railroad bridges that crossed the Mississippi River. Every day he would control the gears of the bridge, [raising the bridge] to allow barges and ships through [and lowering the bridge once the ships passed under it (since a train track spanned the length of the bridge and trains crossed the river on that bridge when the bridge was level)].
"One day John decided to allow his eight-year-old son, Greg, to help him. He and his boy packed their lunches with great excitement and high hopes for the future and went to work. The morning went quickly and at noon they headed off for lunch down a narrow catwalk [walkway] on to an observation platform about 50 feet above the great river. John told Greg stories about the ships as they passed by.
"Suddenly, they were jolted back to reality by the shrill [loud] sound of [a train] engine’s whistle. Looking at his watch, John realized to his horror that it was 1:07 PM, that the Memphis Express (train) was due [to cross the river on the train tracks] any time, and that the bridge was still raised.
"He calmly told Greg to stay put [to stay where he was on the walkway and not move] and then [John, the father] ran back to the controls. Once there, he looked beneath the bridge to make sure there was nothing below.
"As his eyes moved downwards he saw something so terrible that he froze [he stopped still]. For there, lying on the gears, was his beloved son.
"Greg had tried to follow his dad but had fallen off the catwalk.
"Immediately, John saw the horrifying [awful] choice before him ― either lower the bridge and kill his son, or keep the bridge raised and kill everyone on board the train.
